Ghazni Regional Management Office (GRMO)

The Ghazni Regional Management Office (GRMO) of SCA has been active since 1993. The office implements Disability, Education and Rural Development projects in Ghazni and Paktika provinces., GRMO provides services by approximately 8,00 office and project staff members benefiting around 1,150 villages.

Coverage areas in 2023:

Ghazni province: Ghazni, Qarabagh, Andar, Muqur, Jaghori, Qarabagh, , Zenakhan, Dehyak, , Gelan, Gero, Abband, Nawa, Shahid Wali Mohammad, Malistan and Khawja Omari districts.

Paktika province: Sharana, Yusuf-Khail, Sarwaza, Omna, Gomal, , Zarghon Shar, Sarobi, Yahya Khail, Urgon, Dela Khoshamnd, Torwe, Wolmamai, Wazikhaw, Matakhan and Jani Khail.

Programmes and Projects:

Disability:

Disability programme covers the center of Ghazni, Qarabagh, Andar, Muqur, and Jaghori districts of Ghazni province, and the Yusuf-Khail, Sarwaza districts and  Sharan in Paktika province.

The programme supports people with disabilities through four components:

1: Physical Rehabilitation: Physiotherapy is offered to men, women and children. A well-equipped orthopedic workshop provides orthosis, prosthesis, and assistive devices such as wheelchairs, three wheelers, walking frames and toilet seats. A mobile workshop staffed with technical experts provides services in rural areas.

2: Special Education: Children with disabilities are provided with preparatory education either at education centers (Village Based Preparatory Education Center – VPEC) or in their homes. The aim is to prepare them for enrollment in regular schools. In 2023, nearly 560 children with disabilities including 176 girls benefit from special education.

3: Employment Support: People with disabilities receive vocational training and revolving loans to achieve economic self-reliance. In 2023, nearly 67 individuals including 25 women received vocational training and loans.

4: Social Integration: SCA advocates for the rights of people with disabilities through trainings, public awareness sessions and other activities. These efforts aim to change attitudes in the communities and to facilitate social integration of people with disabilities as equal members of society.

Education:

This programme is being implemented in Sharana, Yusuf-Khail, Omna, Gomal, Sarwaza, Zarghon Shar, Sarobi, Yahya Khail, Urgon, Dela Khoshamnd, Torwe, Wolmamai, Wazikhaw, Matakhan and Jani Khail districts of Paktika province. Additionally, education services are provided in Qarabagh, Muqur, Ghazni Center, Jaghori  Zenakhan, Dehyak, Ander, Gelan, Gero, Abband, Nawa, Shahid Wali Mohammad, Malistan and Khawja Omari district of Ghazni province.

In 2023, the Education programme of GRMO has reached nearly 50,000 children, 35,000 of them girls, through village schools (Community Based Education), preparatory education, nomadic classes and coaching classes.

Rural Development:

The Rural Development programme covers three major areas (WASH, Construction and Livelihood) in different districts of Ghazni and Paktika provinces.

The following are some examples of the activities under the three main components of the Rural Development program of GRMO:

Construction:  Schools are being constructed with classrooms, boundary walls, latrines, and solar-driven water supplies.

WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene): Through pipe schemes projects, communities get access to clean drinking water. The projects include awareness raising about good hygiene practices as well as distribution of hygiene kits. In one such project in 2022, a pipe network of 13 km was constructed with 37 public taps, two reservoirs and one solar-powered deep well, benefitting nearly 4,200 people including around 2,200 women and girls.

Livelihood: GRMO implements several projects to generate sustainable sources of income in rural communities. One method is to establish saving groups where the participants get technical and financial assistance.  To counter child labor, In 2023, 68 households where children were involved in labor received financial support and vocational training for the adults to enable the children to attend school instead of working. Under the Cash for Work modality, laborers from local communities are hired for projects benefiting the communities, such as road rehabilitation and water supply.

ABADEI Project:

In 2022, the Area Based Approach to Development Emergency Initiatives, funded by UNDP, ran projects including  livelihood, essential food security and agricultural infrastructure, animal rearing, health and infrastructure in Ghazni and Paktika provinces. For example, 1,700 livestock and agriculture kits were distributed. After the devastating earthquake in Paktika in June 2022, 50 houses were constructed in Gyan district.

In 2022, nearly 11,000 individuals including 4,600 women were supported through ABADEI 1.0 project.
