Afghanistan is one of the countries most vulnerable to the devastating impacts of climate change. With the increasing frequency of floods and droughts, millions of lives are being disrupted. Still, the country faces significant barriers to accessing critical climate adaptation funds. Since the Taliban takeover, Afghanistan has been excluded from the UN-led climate cooperation and the negotiations at COP. But for the first time since the regime change, Afghanistan’s National Environment Protection Agency participated as a guest at COP29. Several civil society representatives were also invited to raise awareness about Afghanistan’s climate challenges.
The Solidarity Committee for Afghanistan, formerly known as the Swedish Committee (SCA), is hosting a seminar to address important questions:
- How are Afghan communities affected by climate change?
- What were the outcomes of COP29 in Baku regarding Afghanistan’s climate challenges?
- How can climate financing reach Afghan communities most in need?
Participants:
Abdulhadi Achakzai, climate activist attending COP29 and director of Environmental Protection Trainings and Development Organization
Dr Assem Mayar, post-doctoral researcher of climate change
Marwa Alam, climate activist attending COP29 and founder the Climate and Environment Youth Initiative
Moderator:
Kajsa Johansson, deputy secretary general, Solidarity Committee for Afghanistan
